What Is IASTM?
It stands for Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization.
Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) is growing in popularity due to its ability to treat a multitude of conditions. The treatment is non-invasive and uses uniquely designed stainless steel instruments to break down scar tissue and fascial restriction. Our therapy instruments of choice are HawkGrips.
HawkGrips are best-in-class instruments that offer a wide variety of edges as well as sizes that allow for precise treatments and quicker recovery. Additionally, they are made of surgical grade stainless steel, which prevents the transfer of bacteria.
This manual therapy technique can produce dramatic results in many of the common musculoskeletal pathologies we see in the upper and lower extremity. The instruments or tools are used for a variety of reasons. One reason is to cause micro trauma to an area in that will create a controlled inflammatory response. This inflammation leads to healing of tendon and ligamentous injuries by enhancing blood supply and collagen formation. In addition, the tools are used to facilitate connective tissue healing as well as reduce scar tissue.
